308 vs 308, putting a semi next to a bolt
This is going to be fun. Going to compare two very different rifles that have one thing in common, me. Most comparisons have some sort of agenda to find a winner. Well that ain’t gonna happen since both of the rifles are mine and I love both of them.
Both of them have been modified to fit and suit me. Both are a perfect fit to me. I have a lot of rounds through them as well, round counts are very similar as of right now.
A little background to get you up to speed. The bolt gun is a Savage Tactical with a 24″ heavy barrel and the LR 308 is a mostly Aero Precision set up with an 18″ Barrel. My form one suppressor sits on the Aero. Savage sits in a custom stock while the Magpul UBR Gen II on the LR308 has been modified as well.
What they have in common: 308, muzzle brakes, 1 in 10T rifling, approx. the same weight, same length of pull, both have extremely light triggers, Vortex PST II scopes (Aero has a 3×15 and Savage has a 5×25) and both are Second Focal Plane sitting in ADM mounts, they share the TAB Gear sling, both sit on BT Industries Atlas Bipods. Grip mods on both rifles to assist with the light weight triggers. Both are magazine fed….
What they don’t have in common… Barrel length 18″ vs 24″, operating systems, stock type and most of the time the AR wears a suppressor.
Neither gun has seen a factory round, and they see the same rounds with only a slightly different load as the Savage likes things a touch hotter than the Aero. I keep the brass separate as neck sizing is good for the bolt but the Aero gets full length sizing on the brass.
So what’s the point? Mostly just fun. Thought it might be nice to see this where there is no intention to find a “winner” just a down in the dirt side by side shoot out (I know bad pun…) for a no holds barred good time. Maybe the comparison is more about me than the platforms…. Might even come up with ways to improve both of them.
So pull up a chair and stay tuned….
